ERC-12-15 Backup Power Relay
The ERC-12-15 Backup Power Relay is designed to ensure uninterrupted power supply to essential communications equipment when AC power is temporarily lost or the primary power supply fails. It functions as a trickle charger, maintaining the backup battery without any modifications.
Upon detection of DC voltage loss, the ERC quickly activates a SPDT relay, automatically switching the equipment’s DC input to a standby battery for continued operation. Once the AC power is restored, the relay disengages, allowing the power supply to resume operation. During normal operation, a portion of the output current is directed to the battery to keep it fully charged. Please note that the float voltage maintained will be 0.7 volts lower than the power supply voltage.
Important: If the power supply is down for an extended duration, the backup battery may deplete while powering the device. Upon restoration of power, the trickle charge may not rapidly recharge the battery; an additional charger may be necessary in such cases.
Installation Guidelines
Choose a suitable location close to the battery, avoiding areas with a risk of accidental contact or shorting terminals. The ERC can be installed vertically, horizontally, or even upside down as required. Use two #10 screws for mounting, and it is safe to attach the unit to a metal surface as it isolates inputs and outputs from the bracket.
Warning: Avoid installing the ERC in unventilated enclosures if the battery is housed there, as it should not be located near battery gases or potentially explosive vapors.
Wiring Recommendations
Ensure wiring is as direct as possible, and check that battery posts are free from corrosion. The proper wire gauge depends on the total run length:
Connect wiring to the ERC using the provided crimp ring lug connectors. Models ERC-12-15 and ERC-24-15 come with yellow terminal covers that should be reinstalled post-wiring to prevent shorts.
